On Plans

I saw this quote on my newsfeed on Facebook:

Sometimes life takes us places we never expected to go. And in those places God writes a story we never thought would be ours.

– Renee Swope

I cannot begin to express how true this is. All my life is a story God has written and laid out from before I was born. There are a lot of things I had never expected to happen. My move here was something I never expected to happen. Yes, I had vaguely entertained the thought of moving before, but I never expected it to happen. There are a lot of things I think of doing or wanting to do, but never really get around to doing. I’m seeing now that whether or not something does happen is up to God.

And the message of this quote applies to me today, too. I have been considering my future, and have been making plans, and thinking of how best to present these plans to my parents (and how I might try to convince them if I have to), but without God, all my planning will come to nothing.

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil.

– James 4:13-16 (NIV 1984)
